Care Instructions

Handcrafted furniture rewards a little routine care. These notes cover solid wood, veneer, upholstery and outdoor pieces in a humid climate.

Everyday care for solid wood

  • Dust with a dry or barely damp soft cloth, following the direction of the grain
  • Wipe spills immediately, particularly alcohol, oil and anything acidic
  • Use coasters, placemats and trivets under drinks and hot dishes
  • Lift objects rather than dragging them across the surface

What to keep away from the finish

  • Silicone-based sprays and all-purpose furniture polish, which build a film that later clouds and complicates refinishing
  • Ammonia, vinegar and other household solutions, which strip protective finishes over time
  • Sustained direct sunlight, which fades and unevenly darkens wood within a single summer
  • Standing water and dripping cloths — damp is fine, wet is not

Humidity, monsoon and air conditioning

Wood takes on and releases moisture with the air around it. The difficult period is not the wettest month but the transition: furniture that sits in monsoon humidity and is then dried rapidly by air conditioning can develop hairline checks or a drawer that binds.

Keep pieces a few centimetres clear of external walls so air can circulate behind them, avoid pointing air conditioning directly at a large wooden surface, and expect drawers to run slightly tighter in the wet months. That movement is normal and generally reverses as conditions change.

Veneer and engineered surfaces

Clean with a soft, barely damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not allow water to sit at edges or seams, where it can penetrate and lift the veneer. Avoid abrasive pads and scouring cream, which dull the surface permanently.

Upholstery

  • Vacuum regularly on a low setting with an upholstery attachment
  • Blot spills — never rub, which drives the stain into the weave
  • Rotate and turn reversible cushions so wear and compression stay even
  • Keep upholstered pieces out of direct sunlight, which fades most dyes
  • Have a professional clean fitted upholstery rather than saturating it at home

Outdoor furniture

Outdoor timber weathers by design and will silver over time unless treated. Clean it with mild soap and water at the start and end of the monsoon, let it dry fully, and re-oil annually if you want to retain the original colour. Cover or store pieces during prolonged heavy rain, and lift them clear of standing water.

Twice a year

Check and gently tighten visible fixings — chair and table joints loosen gradually with ordinary use, and a joint tightened early does not become a repair. For oiled finishes, reapply a thin coat of the oil specified for your piece and wipe off the excess after about fifteen minutes. Lacquered and PU finishes should not be oiled; doing so only leaves residue.

When to call us

Deep scratches, water rings that have gone through the finish, joinery that loosens repeatedly, or cracking that runs across the grain are worth having looked at rather than treated at home. Our pieces carry a 10-year warranty and early repairs are almost always smaller than late ones.
